Meeting the land Rachel Sudworth
Scotland, in particular the North West and the Isle of Skye holds a special place in my soul. Being somewhere wild, a long quiet beach or the layers of mountains in mist always captures my imagination, and though my landscapes are rarely specific places its somewhere my mind always returns to and is constantly inspiring.
The set of four 20x20 oils on board are a special collection. They are inspired by memories of our first holiday as a 4 along the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. Exploring rock pools, holding sandy hands, paddling in the cold sea. I wanted to capture and share the essence of that precious time through the shapes, colours and marks in the paintings.
Closer to home on the Welsh border we are so lucky to have such dark skies, the moon is often beautifully dramatic, casting shadows and layers.
From my studio I can watch the sunlight creep up through the hedges and trees, slowly revealing colours.
Often paintings start at a point like this and then develop as I explore layers, texture and marks. I like to create paintings that will take you on a journey and hold you in a moment, the abstract nature of these remembered landscapes leaving a space for the viewers' involvement in the work.
