Pear Duet Nancy Chambers
Nancy Chambers is a British artist creating still-life paintings with a pared-back style and
contemporary elegance.
Nancy describes her painting style as ‘creating calm from the chaos of paint’.
‘I enjoy not just the colour but the textural quality of paint and I work with both to achieve the
finished painting. With a dandelion, for instance, I paint with needles to capture their distinctive
petals and for my pears I paint in many thin glazes to achieve depth as well as detail.
She says ‘My inspiration comes from capturing fleeting moments in nature. I'm captivated by
the pied beauty of a pear, the sheen of a pomegranate and the bloom on a plum. Spending time
with nature, in my garden or walking, fuels my creativity and continually inspires my art. In the
studio I will distil each subject to its purest form, with the aim of making work which is elegant
and uncluttered.’
‘I draw inspiration from the still life paintings of Dutch masters but I think you can draw a line
from my work back to mid-century British artists including Barbara Hepworth and Mary Feddon
who mastered how to capture simplicity and purity in their artworks.’
