We open our 2026 season with an exhibition of work by nine women artists inspired by the dramatic landscapes of the North. From the dark romance of the Yorkshire Moors to the bleak beauty of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, these artworks explore the untameable atmosphere of Britain’s northern reaches.

Sharon Harvey’s travels to the Hebridean Islands continue to inspire her work. Based on sketches made during ocean crossings from the mainland to Iona and the Small Isles, her paintings bring sea and sky together in a tableau of colours that define Scotland’s Northwest edge.

Aberdeen based artist Briony Jenkins paints the vast, uninterrupted skies of Scotland’s Northeast coast. Using powerfully simple compositions, she captures shifting clouds, sweeping shadow, and the brilliance of natural sunlight at both dawn and dusk.

Painter Kim Jarvis’s love of the sea takes her to extraordinary places, including Scotland’s West Coast and its outlying islands. Her previous career as a maker of stained glass is evident in her exquisite use of light and colour, and her talent for capturing the contrasting shapes of beach, blue ocean and distant headlands.

Bev Campbell’s paintings are created outdoors on the remote moorlands, mountains and coastline of the British Isles. Through a process of layering, erasing and reglazing of oil paint, she captures the translucent atmosphere of changing weather systems and patterns of light on the land.

Award winning artist Sarah K. Tew lives and works on the North York Moors. Painting in watercolour, ink and acrylic, she is inspired by the moor’s wild weather systems, and those fleeting moments when shafts of light and sheets of rain and snow transform the landscape.

Rachel Redfern’s extended journeys through Scotland, walking the Highland Way or swimming in Loch Lomond, have inspired her recent paintings. Based on photographs, sketches and memories of time spent in nature, they reflect both the softness and drama of the Scottish landscape.

Manchester based artist Nicola Briggs makes paintings and pottery that celebrate our connection to wild places. On either canvas or clay, she layers paints and glazes in a rich natural palette, using freely applied brushwork to reflect the patterns of the land.

Deborah Harwood’s porcelain works reflect her love of tranquil landscapes. With an emphasis on clean lines and minimal colour, she uses the Neriage ceramic technique of combining coloured clays to create softly marbled pieces, with simplicity of form in mind.

Glasgow based potter Kim Plimley spent a decade living in the Cairngorms National Park. In glazes that reflect the colours of lichen and stone, and elaborate surfaces rich with organic texture, she makes stoneware pieces inspired by the beauty of the Highlands.
