  • Astrig Akseralian has a BA(Hons) in Ceramics from the Central School of Art and Design, London. Following her degree she set up her studio at the Cockpit Yard Workshops in Holborn, London and from there created and sold her work through various galleries in the UK and internationally, including Barneys in New York. Her ceramics were decorated with animals, wild and domestic and full of colour and energy.

Some years later Astrig had a change of career moving into the film industry as a freelance painter working in the Creature Effects Departments. Over 27 years she received many credits on films made in the UK and on location around the world, including Harry Potter, Gladiator and Muppet Treasure Island. In 2011 Astrig decided to concentrate full time on her own painting practice and she is now based in Somerset

    Artist Statement

I paint narrative flora and fauna scenes based around themes which I am drawn to. Simple acts, such as walking the dog and feeding the hens and goats. I also love the individuality and magic of allotments, being a keen grower of flowers and vegetables.

My paintings celebrate the relationships we have with our domestic companions and other living things around us. When I reflect on my childhood and how we shared our home with many dogs, a few cats and other pets, their very individual characters are imprinted in my memory. They all brought huge joy to our lives and I wish to reflect that feeling back to the viewer

I prefer to work on wooden panels as I like the tough surface which can tolerate many layers, scratching through the acrylic paint and sometimes sanding back through the layers revealing hidden secrets. I begin by mixing an extensive palette of colours which excite me. I always work in a series to avoid becoming precious over a single panel, enjoying loose marks using paint and pastel pencils. These gradually evolve and the stories begin to build. My painting process gradually slows down and my decisions become more considered. I will often alter the compositional elements moving characters around within the painting until I am satisfied with the balance. I allow each painting to present its own story. I enjoy this process and its often unpredictable outcomes.
