    Artist Statement

Pennie's artistic exploration delves into the intricate interplay of contrasting emotions and human experiences. Fascinated by the stark contrasts and parallels between emotions such as loss and hope, sensitivity and brutality, isolation and connectedness, Pennie seeks to incorporate these dynamics in her contemporary oil paintings. Her works invite viewers to immerse themselves in narratives that unveil an internal landscape, often evoking a cinematic quality.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of sources, Pennie's creative process is enriched by location sketches, film, music, reduction printmaking, and long-exposure night photography. These studies provide the foundation for her paintings, which are developed on pre-prepared grounds, referencing composition and atmosphere. Pennie applies multiple thin layers of oil paint combined with linseed oil, solvent, and cold wax in a process that involves an interplay of application, wiping back, and reapplication, expanding the range of tone, temperature, and opacity in an attempt to articulate the stark contrasts and parallels that Pennie has both experienced and observed.
