Philippa C Thomas The MacLeod’s Tables
Philippa C Thomas has a background in illustration and theatre design. Her printing practise is based on observational drawing in the landscape and a process of material exploration in the studio. Having worked on several collaborative projects, she feels the value of working collectively and seeks ways to do that in print.
This is a print inspired by the mountains and crofts of Skye on the West Coast of Scotland.
The MacLeod’s Tables are flat topped mountains in the north west of the island, so called after the legend in which a 16th-century Chief of Clan MacLeod, Alasdair Crotach, boasted to King James V's courtiers that he had a grander table on his island than any in the lowlands. To prove it, he hosted a banquet for the King and his entourage on the summit of Healabhal Mhor, the larger of the two flat-topped hills, using the hill's plateau as his magnificent table and surrounding his clansmen with torches to serve as candles.
