Sarah Hillman Petal Wave Form Slim
Sarah creates stunning ceramic forms that combine bold contemporary colour and striking sculptural design. Pure white clay forms are individually hand cut with sweeping curves revealing a vibrant interior. The hand mixed interior colour is specifically designed as a non-reflective surface, creating a bold contrast to the natural clay exterior. By absorbing light, the unglazed interior offers stunning shadows within the deep colour of the form. These innovative forms explore positive and negative space through changing compositions of line, colour, and contour.
Sarah has been working in ceramics since 1994 where she took up the subject at Farnham College; instantly hooked by the freedom of the material, she went on to complete her master’s from the Centre for Ceramic Studies in Cardiff in 2004. Sarah then spent five years as a resident maker at the prestigious Cockpit Art studios in London. During her time here she exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts as part of the Modern British Sculpture Exhibition and had her work featured on ITV's This Morning for six months as part of their 2011 studio set.
“I have been driven by the fluid nature of clay since the first day I worked with the medium. The possibilities seem endless; clay has its own presence and energy that I try to capture within my work. I am fascinated by abstract Modernist sculpture and the way it challenges our everyday perception, in particular the beautiful, pierced forms of Barbara Hepworth and the clever perceptual disorientation in the work of Anish Kapoor. I am also inspired by the dramatic effects of light and shadow; I continue to explore this through my work as I believe it brings a new interactive element to my ceramics.”
Sarah works from her home studio on the edge of the South Downs in Sussex.
